Tankersley’s post highlights one of the unsung victims of the government shutdown, addressing the less known problems that it caused.  While concerns over the debt ceiling and the global economy were at the forefront of media coverage, there was the underlying concern for the people who were furloughed.  However, there is a sense that because they were part of the government, they are somehow okay.  John Anderson is the average Joe, yet his life is nearly ruined by the shutdown.

“We were laid off. We weren’t furloughed. This is ridiculous.”

The piece is a subtle reminder that despite the government being reopened, the shutdown had lasting effects on regular people.  By focusing on a single person, he examines a less-known aspect to the bigger story of the government shutdown.
